About us

October 1st 2023 saw Birmingham Wheels celebrate 40 years as a club. The club was born as a result of the opening of the Birmingham Wheels Adventure Park in Saltley, Birmingham. Its initial seeds were sewn as far back as 1910 when the old Embassy roller rink in Sparkbrook opened its doors for the first time and a Birmingham speed club was formally recognised. In the mid 1950’s a few breakaway skaters formed a second club, Midland, who went on to produce world champions, European champions, world record holders and countless national champions. The Midland club briefly became known as Midland Olympic in 1966 with the opening of the Mecca Olympic roller rink in Springhill. When that rink closed the club again changed its name in the mid 1970’s to Mercia which then went on to become Birmingham Wheels, the club we know and love today.

Birmingham Wheels has produced champions in every category and age group and now with over 500 national titles to its name stands proudly atop a vast number of clubs and former clubs to be the most successful the sport has ever known in almost 130 years of roller/inline speed skating. Internally we measure our success in smiles, not just gold medals.

In January 2023 the club lost its “home”, the track at the Birmingham Wheels Adventure Park, to developers. Since that time the club has embraced new training venues that has attracted new members as well as new training ideas. Despite this challenge the club continues to be successful at every level and is working hard to secure a “new home” for its current and future members to enjoy.

Our multi-cultural and diverse membership currently enjoys races against like-minded skaters up and down the country.  Birmingham Wheels continues to set the standard for British roller/inline speed skating whilst, of course, firmly waving the flag for Birmingham and its local communities.
